Daly City Councilwoman Appears Headed to Trial
A Daly City, Calif., council member accused of exercising at the gym and riding a motorcycle when she was supposed to be too injured to work appears headed for trial.
San Mateo County prosecutors tell the San Francisco Examiner they were unable to reach a settlement with 55-year-old Maggie Gomez during a court meeting on Jan. 31. She is scheduled to go on trial on March 7 on felony worker’s compensation fraud charges.
Investigators say they saw Gomez exercising, walking long distances, motorcycling and climbing out of her boyfriend’s truck — activities she said she was unable to do because of an injury she suffered while working at a hospital.
Gomez has pleaded not guilty and remains free on $100,000 bail. She was elected to a third term on the council in November.
