California’s Pacific Surfliner to Install Safety Equipment

The California Department of Transportation says it has received nearly $25 million in federal funding to install safety equipment on the Pacific Surfliner rail line in San Diego County.

The department said Wednesday it will provide matching funds so that a total of $50 million will be spent on installing a computer system that can stop trains headed for a collision course.

By law positive train control technology, which relies on global positioning systems, must be installed by 2015 in response to the 2008 deadly crash of a Metrolink commuter train and a freight train in Los Angeles.

The Pacific Surfliner corridor is the second busiest of five intercity passenger rail routes operated by Amtrak California.
