California Community Press for Gas Line Safety Bill
Survivors of last year’s devastating pipeline explosion in San Bruno gathered before the blast site Tuesday to advocate for a state bill that would strengthen oversight of natural gas lines and the companies that run them.
Democratic State Assemblyman Jerry Hill is pushing legislation that would require utilities to properly spend the public money they receive on safety projects and could force the companies to install shut-off valves on transmission lines.
Hill represents San Bruno and surrounding cities. He toured the damaged area along with other local authorities a few days before the explosion’s one-year anniversary.
Eight people were killed, dozens were injured and 38 homes in the San Francisco suburban neighborhood were destroyed on Sept. 9, 2010.
Residents will hold a remembrance ceremony marking the anniversary on Friday.
