Police Investigate Idaho Storm Drain Thefts
Police suspect metal thieves are behind the disappearance of several storm drain covers in the northern Idaho city of Lewiston, Idaho.
Lewiston Police Cpt. Tom Greene says the grated covers are likely being taken so they can be sold as scrap metal. Lewiston street maintenance manager Keith Bingman says at least eight storm water covers have turned up missing during the past few weeks.
Bingman says the thefts are creating a safety hazard, with large curbside holes left open.
The Lewiston Tribune reports the missing covers are valued at about $2,000 and each weigh around 50 pounds. Police suspect that due to the risk involved in removing the covers in daylight, thieves are taking the materials at night.
