Parents of Slain Armored Car Guard File Suit in Washington

The parents of a Loomis armored car guard killed in June 2009 have sued Washington state, contending corrections officers didn’t do enough to monitor the gunman.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Pierce County Superior Court on behalf of the estate of guard Kurt Husted and Wilbert Pina, who survived the shooting. Pina was wounded by the bullet that killed Husted.

Lawyer Jeremy Johnston alleges the Washington Corrections Department did little to look for the gunman, Calvin Finley. The man was a convicted felon on state supervision who had a national warrant for his arrest for failing to report to his community corrections officer.

In a statement, the Corrections Department said it will work with its lawyers to decide the best course of action “for the agency, taxpayers and the parties involved.”

The 38-year-old Husted was picking up receipts at a Lakewood Wal-Mart when he was shot. Finley pleaded guilty to aggravated first-degree murder and other counts and was sentenced to life without parole. Three others were also convicted in the case.
