California Gov. Brown: Public OK with Bay Bridge Safety
California Gov. Jerry Brown says he believes the public still has confidence in the safety of the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
State transportation officials recently disclosed that nearly three dozen seismic safety bolts on the eastern span of the bridge had broken. But Brown says people generally understand there will be construction problems on major infrastructure projects.
“Look, (stuff) happens,” he told reporters after attending a memorial ceremony at the California Highway Patrol Academy in West Sacramento for officers killed in the line of duty.
The span has cost $6.4 billion so far.
Brown said it’s too soon to say if the bridge will open as scheduled on Labor Day. Officials said the remaining bridge bolts have shown no sign of failure.
