Wildfire Recovery Picks Up a Year After Waldo Canyon Fire
Scores of new homes are springing up just one year after the Waldo Canyon Fire ravaged a Colorado Springs neighborhood.
Flames crossed into the Mountain Shadows subdivision on June 26, 2012. The fire killed two people and destroyed 347 homes.
Nationwide statistics on how many people rebuild after a disaster are hard to come by. But the rate in Mountain Shadows appears to be high.
Seventy homes have been rebuilt, and their owners have moved back in. About 130 more homes are under construction.
An estimated 20 to 25 percent of those who lost their homes have decided not to return.
