Speeders Targeted in Northeast Nevada Campaign

April 30, 2014

Law enforcement agencies are uniting in a campaign to target speeders in northeast Nevada.

The Department of Public Safety says various agencies will be focusing on drivers who put the pedal to the metal on rural highways and roads.

The campaign began Sunday and runs through May 10.

Officers say the goal is to reduce the number of traffic accidents and deaths.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show 258 traffic deaths in Nevada in 2012. Of those, 100 were attributed to speeding, up from 24 the previous year.

The Nevada Highway Patrol also wants to debunk a perception that motorists can travel 10 mph over the speed limit without being stopped.

Trooper Loy Hixson says exceeding the speed limit by even 1 mph can result in a ticket.
