N.Y. Disaster Assistance Covers Well or Septic System Damage for Several Counties
New York residents in Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Orange, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Tioga or Ulster County, whose wells or septic systems were damaged as a result of the April 2-4 severe storms and floods, may be eligible for financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to complete necessary repairs.
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) does not cover damage to wells and septic tanks. However, homeowners in declared areas may be eligible for a grant to have their disaster damaged septic tanks pumped, repaired or replaced. Damaged private wells that are the sole water source for the home also may be repaired or decontaminated.
Anyone who has suffered loss or damage from the disaster must first register for assistance by calling FEMA’s toll-free teleregistration number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). For those with hearing or speech impairments call (TTY) at 1-800-462-7585.
