OSHA Proposes Fine Against Pa. Steel Firm

Shane Felter Industries Inc., which makes steel beams used in bridges and other construction projects, faces more than $166,000 in proposed fines for allegedly violating federal workplace safety rules.

Shane Felter, of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, did not repair or replace defective parts on seven overhead cranes, OSHA said. OSHA proposed $56,000 in fines for those violations, which it says were “willful.”

OSHA also wants more than $110,000 in other fines for lesser violations ranging from allegedly having inadequate protective equipment for workers to using open flames or sparks near flammable liquids.

The company did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.

OSHA said it inspected the company after reviewing its workplace illness and injury records. The investigation grew to include previously cited hazards that the company didn’t fix, OSHA said.
