National Grid to Seek Repayment after Water Main Break

May 2, 2008

National Grid will seek repayment of nearly $5 million from the Boston Sewer and Water Commission after a water main break flooded natural gas lines.

A company official said it won’t pass on to customers the cost of pumping water out of the system because it believes the commission is liable.

Most of the cost is for overtime for work crews brought in from all over the region and for specialized pumping equipment.

A spokesman for the city agency told The Boston Globe that liability for the costs of the water main break hasn’t been resolved.

National Grid said Thursday it had restored gas service to more than 90 percent of the 410 commercial and residential customers who were affected by the outage.
