Asbestos Concerns Close Vermont School
The Main Street Middle School in Montpelier, Vt. is closed because of concerns about asbestos contamination.
It’s unclear if the school will open as scheduled for the start of school at the end of August.
A safety inspector from the Vermont Health Department discovered that workers were removing asbestos-contaminated tiles improperly from the floors of the hallways last week.
Construction workers and school staff were told to vacate the building.
The district’s asbestos control officer, who was called in to draw up a cleanup plan, said that he didn’t know if the school would be able to reopen on time next month.
The cleanup plan must be removed and approved by the state Health Department.
