High Winds Blamed for Vermont Power Outages

September 17, 2008

About 10,000 Vermont homes and businesses lost power after gusty winds — the remnants of Hurricane Ike — blew through New England, downing trees and power lines.

About 9,500 Central Vermont Public Service Corp. customers lost electricity between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday, but spokeswoman Christine Rivers says power has been restored to more than half now. Windsor, Orange and Rutland counties were the hardest hit.

Vermont Emergency Management spokesman Mark Bosma says that statewide, about 10,000 lost power in the storm.
