Delaware Gets $197K in Mattel Settlement over Lead in Toys

Delaware will receive $197,000 in a multistate settlement with Mattel, Inc., and subsidiary Fisher-Price, Inc., over excessive lead paint in the companies’ toys.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled about 2 million Mattel and Fisher-Price toys made in China between August and October 2007. The commission says the toys contained excessive lead in surface paint, in some instances more than 83 times the legal level.

The toy companies agreed Monday to settle an investigation by making a $12 million payment to 42 states and complying with more stringent lead standards.

The Delaware Department of Justice says the money paid to Delaware will go the state’s Consumer Protection Fund.
