New York Arrests Man Who Cashed Deceased Mom’s Workers’ Comp Checks
A Rochester, New York man who fraudulently cashed $15,000 in workers’ compensation checks made out to his deceased mother was arrested last week and charged with grand larceny, the New York State Insurance Department said.
Tyress C. Pointer, 34, was arrested by Rochester police and state police following an investigation by the Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau, the New York State Insurance Fund and the Inspector General’s Office of the Workers’ Compensation Board.
The Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau said Pointer, who is unemployed, admitted to investigators he did not advise the Insurance Fund that his mother died in April 2007. Pointer collected and cashed the checks between April 2007 and August 2008.
Following his arrest, Pointer was released pending a hearing to be scheduled in Rochester City Court. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison.
