Pedestrian Deaths in New Jersey Jump at Start of Year
New Jersey officials say pedestrian deaths have increased dramatically so far in 2009.
They’re not sure why.
Forty-six were killed between Jan. 1 and March 8. Last year, 28 died during the same period.
State Highway Traffic Safety director Pam Fisher says it’s confounding because the number is usually lower during cold-weather months.
New Jersey Turnpike Authority spokesman Joe Orlando says there are two categories of pedestrian fatalities on the roads his agency runs. Some are people who improperly use the major roads for walking. Others are struck when they get out of their cars after crashes or breakdowns.
