Massachusetts Jury Clears Doctor Who Treated Injured Cop
A doctor who treated a Westminster, Massachusetts police officer who died more than three years after being shot in the line of duty has been cleared of negligence.
Dr. John Turchetta and Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Westborough were named as defendants in a medical malpractice and wrongful death lawsuit filed in 2002, after Officer Lawrence Jupin died in a nursing home.
He had been shot in 1999.
The suit, brought by Jupin’s mother and the town, claimed Turchetta should have treated Jupin differently to prevent brain damage.
The Telegram & Gazette of Worcester reports that the jury decided Wednesday that nothing Turchetta did or failed to do contributed to Jupin’s death.
The man charged with shooting Jupin is scheduled for trial next month.
