New York City Balconies Declared Unsafe
Tenants at 16 New York City buildings have been told to stay off their balconies because they are unsafe.
The Department of Buildings issued the warning on Monday. It has conducted safety inspections on 530 buildings so far. A Manhattan man fell to his death in March when part of the railing on his 24th floor balcony gave way.
The agency also found that some 800 building owners have failed to file mandatory inspection reports on the safety of their balconies and terraces. It’s a requirement they must meet every five years.
The 16 buildings affected by the order are in every borough except Brooklyn.
