Vermont Protesters to Get $2,500 Apiece in Settlement
Four people charged with disorderly conduct for protesting about Vermont Yankee during a 2009 speech by Gov. Jim Douglas will get $2,500 each under a settlement with the town.
Jonathan Crowell, Amy Frost, Eesha Williams and Elizabeth Wood were handcuffed and arrested after interrupting a Douglas speech by silently holding up signs reading “Veto Nuclear Jim and “Shut VY.”
Their attorney, Stephen Saltonstall, says the out-of-court settlement of the four’s lawsuit calls for payments by the Vermont League of Cities and Towns’ risk pool.
Saltonstall and the American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont, which assisted in the case, will share $7,500. The Brattleboro Reformer reports the town will have to pay only $500, its deductible under the insurance policy.
