Worker Injured in Connecticut Bridge Collapse

Authorities say a worker injured when a Naugatuck bridge collapsed had just warned colleagues to get off the span because he was worried about its stability.

The man, who works for Southington-based Brunalli Construction, was hospitalized after the incident early Tuesday on the Route 63 bridge. His name and condition weren’t immediately released.

The affected bridge section was closed to traffic at the time of the collapse, and no motorists were hurt.

About 100 feet of the 586-foot bridge buckled and fell as construction crews used a pneumatic jackhammer mounted on an excavator around 7 a.m. Police say the injured worker was trying to move the excavator off the bridge when that portion collapsed.

A newly rebuilt parallel portion was closed for re-inspection after the unconnected older part collapsed. The newer portion was expected to reopen Tuesday.
