Virginia County Seeks Agricultural Disaster Declaration
Add Shenandoah County to the list of Virginia counties seeking agricultural disaster declarations because of drought conditions.
The Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday urged state and federal officials to have the county declared an agricultural disaster.
More than a dozen other counties have submitted similar requests to Gov. Bob McDonnell’s office.
Bobby Clark, with the Virginia Cooperative Extension, says hay and pasture yield losses in Shenandoah County are estimated at more than 50 percent. Corn losses are similar.
Clark says farmers already were struggling after a severe winter that resulted in millions of dollars in losses.
