Connecticut Contractor Fraud Cases Led to 33 Convictions
Connecticut’s attorney general’s office and the Department of Consumer Protection say their investigations into criminal activity involving home improvement contractors has led to 33 convictions.
Between Jan. 4 and June 6, contractors were convicted in 33 cases and placed in pretrial diversion programs in five other cases. The effort resulted in nearly $233,000 in restitution to the consumers who originally hired the contractors.
The state offices say two of the contractors are now serving jail time.
Attorney General George Jepsen said many of the convictions involved complaints about work performed by unregistered individuals and companies. He said consumers need to make sure that a contractor they hire is registered. While it doesn’t guarantee they are competent, he said it does give consumers certain rights and protections.
