Arson Ruled Out as Cause of Fire at Groton Inn in Massachusetts

Arson has been ruled out as the cause of a fire that gutted a Colonial-era inn in Groton last week, and fire investigators say the real cause may never be known.

Town Manager Mark Haddad says lightning has also been ruled out as the cause of the multi-alarm blaze at the Old Groton Inn on Aug. 2.

He tells The Sun of Lowell that the likely cause is electrical, but even that is not certain.

He says investigators concluded their investigation last week.

No one was hurt in the blaze at the 333-year-old inn that didn’t have rooms for guests, just a restaurant. About 100 firefighters from more than a dozen departments helped battle the blaze.

The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
