3 New York Shopping Malls Sued for Discrimination
A man who uses a wheelchair has sued three suburban New York City shopping malls, claiming they violate the federal disabilities act.
Modesto Hernandez filed the lawsuits against the Midway Shopping Center in Scarsdale and the Central Plaza and Tanglewood shopping centers in Yonkers.
The Journal News says the lawsuits claim that the shopping centers have inaccessible parking for the disabled on excessively sloped ground and badly designed curb cuts for wheelchairs. The lawsuits demand that the court order the shopping centers to make changes to the features.
Tanglewood Shopping Center’s CEO, Richard Braverman, couldn’t be reached for comment.
Urstadt Biddle Properties, which controls Midway and Central Plaza, declined comment, citing the pending case.
