Child Severely Burned When Transformer Explodes in Virginia
Authorities say a 6-year-old girl was severely injured when a transformer exploded at the Liberty Park Sports Complex in Vestavia Hills.
Vestavia Hills Fire Chief Jim St. John tells The Birmingham News that the girl received severe burns around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
He said the girl was treated by a doctor who happened to be at the scene and by paramedics. She was then flown by helicopter to Children’s of Alabama hospital.
St. John said he did not know what the girl was doing around the transformer or how close she was to it.
