Rebuilding of Quake-Damaged Virginia School to Begin

October 24, 2012

Louisa County, Va., officials are preparing to break ground for a new elementary school that will replace one severely damaged by the 2011 earthquake.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch says the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Thomas Jefferson Elementary School is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The school is expected to be completed for the 2014-2015 school year.

Students have attended classes in temporary facilities since the magnitude-5.8 earthquake damaged the elementary school and Louisa County High School on Aug. 23, 2011.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded $3.2 million to help pay for the new elementary school.
