Baltimore Basilica Reopening After Quake Repair

The Archdiocese of Baltimore says its downtown basilica will reopen Easter Sunday following repairs to damage caused by a 2011 earthquake.

The church was closed last August for repairs caused by the 5.8 magnitude quake in Virginia.

The basilica did not suffer structural damage but minor cracks caused by the quake continued to expand, prompting the repairs. Archdiocese officials said at the time that the church would be closed on weekdays, but weekend masses and scheduled weddings would take place. The repairs to the historic basilica cost nearly $3 million.

The quake also caused millions of dollars of damage to Washington’s National Cathedral and the Washington Monument.
