Massachusetts City Gets $21M Grant for Storm Damage

April 5, 2013

The city of Springfield, Mass., has received a $21 million federal grant to help pay the long-term costs of recovering from a tornado that hit the city two years ago.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban development was announced last week.

HUD allocated another $7 million to the state to cover damage from the storms. Four tornadoes touched down in western and central Massachusetts in June 2011, destroying or damaging 1,400 houses.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said the money will allow Springfield to continue to rebuild.
