New York Bans 12 Doctors From No-Fault Insurance Billing
New York officials have banned 12 doctors and six therapists from billing the state’s no-fault auto insurance system in an initiative to crack down on fraudulent medical mills costing hundreds of millions of dollars.
Insurance regulators say their investigation showed evidence of doctors and therapists providing unnecessary treatment to accident victims, billing insurers for that and other treatment never provided and “renting” their taxpayer identification number to fraudulent medical practices that submit fake bills to insurance companies.
They issued regulations and sent certified letters last year to dozens of doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists and physical therapists, demanding they explain suspect billing patterns and threatening to remove them from the program if they didn’t respond.
Most of the doctors are in New York City.
