Maine Island Fire Causes $5 to $9M in Damage
Police in the Maine city of Portland say a fire in an historic fort that was being renovated into an inn on Great Diamond Island has caused an estimated $5 million to $9 million in damage.
The early morning fire on Saturday was spotted by the tender of the Casco Bay Bridge who reporting seeing a glow from the island.
Firefighters and police from Portland and Long Island and island volunteer fire crews helped get the fire under control.
No one was injured.
The state fire marshal’s office is helping to investigate the cause of the fire.
Officials say the Inn at Diamond Cove was being developed in a former U.S. Army barracks on the site of Fort McKinley, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
