Hazard Order Against Connecticut Bus Driver Lifted
The U.S. Department of Transportation has withdrawn a claim that a bus driver who suffered a seizure while driving a U.S. Coast Guard Academy hockey team hid hidden a serious medical condition.
The DOT says further medical evaluation determined that the Feb. 9 episode was caused by epilepsy that had not been diagnosed previously.
The cadets on the bus were credited with averting an accident by removing the driver, Terence Slowther, from his seat and stopping the bus on Interstate 95 in the New Haven area.
The DOT earlier this month imposed an “imminent hazard” order on Slowther, which could have subjected him to civil penalties. DOT spokesman Duane DeBruyne said Thursday the order has been rescinded although Slowther is still disqualified from operating a commercial motor vehicle.
Slowther had reported experiencing dizziness in the past.
