Central Virginia Participating in National Traffic Safety Campaign

Law enforcement officials in central Virginia are participating in a nationwide traffic safety campaign.

On Tuesday, state troopers, police officers and sheriff’s deputies will be conducting DUI checkpoints and roving patrols within 15 counties and six cities as part of the “Drive to Save Lives” campaign.

Drivers can expect to see a heightened presence of law enforcement on major highways and secondary routes.

Virginia State Police hope the campaign will serve as a wakeup call for motorists to drive to save lives every day by buckling up, complying with speed limits, and not driving distracted or impaired.

Officials say there have been more than 215 reported fatal crashes in Virginia this year, compared with nearly 260 in the same period last year.
