Maine Introduces New Hurricane Planning Map

September 12, 2014

Maine officials say a new hurricane mapping tool will assist emergency officials in preparing for hurricanes.

The state announced the creation of the Potential Hurricane Inundation Map series on Wednesday. The state’s Bureau of Resource Information’s Maine Geological Survey created the map with money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The map shows areas along the Maine coast that could flood under Category 1 or 2 hurricanes. Gov. Paul LePage says the tool has the ability to “save lives and limit property damage.”

Officials say the map will be useful for improving emergency preparedness because it will help identify vulnerable public infrastructure.
