No News – or Hurricanes – Is Good News

For the first time since the beginning of August, when Charley appeared as a tropical depression, there are no new potentially destructive hurricanes in formation out in the Atlantic.

Miami’s National Hurricane Center has stopped monitoring Jeanne, as the storm weakens and moves north. The only other disturbance, Tropical Storm Lisa, is 1100 miles (1770 km) east-northeast of the Lesser Antilles; i.e. out in the middle of the Atlantic, and it doesn’t seem to be posing a threat to any land mass.

The forecasters at the NHC deserve the thanks of everyone from the far reaches of the Caribbean to the Eastern and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. for their hard work and dedication during an unprecedented series of violent tropical storms.

As bad as the ravages caused by the hurricanes have been, they would have been a lot worse without the forewarnings provided by the NHC. Let’s hope they get the rest they deserve.
