Debby is Season’s 4th Named Storm

Tropical Depression 4 has strengthened into Tropical Storm Debby, the fourth named storm of the current season.

According to the most recent bulletin from Miami’s National Hurricane Center, “maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph./65 km/hr. with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 45 miles/75 kms from the center.”

As of 1100 p.m. AST, “the center of tropical storm Debby was located near latitude 15.2 north/longitude 28.9 west or about 300 miles/485 kms west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands”, said the bulletin. It is moving slowly toward the west-northwest near 18-mph/30 km/hr, which is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.

According to the NHC’s 5-day tracking forecast, Debby would pass well north of Bermuda and, unless the storm changes course would pose no threat to the U.S. mainland.
