Truck Falls Off Northern Philippine Cliff; 4 Dead
Philippine police say a truck carrying more than 60 people from a wedding has plunged into a ravine in the country’s mountainous north, killing four passengers and injuring the rest.
Police Superintendent Davy Vicente Limmong says the truck was carrying villagers back home from the celebration in the mountain town of Mayoyao in Ifugao province when a part of the narrow road gave in Saturday, causing the vehicle to plummet into a 100-meter (328-foot) ravine.
Limmong said Sunday that 31 of the more than 50 injured passengers had serious injuries.
Candidates for the May 13 local elections postponed campaign rallies in Mayoyao to mourn the dead.
Reckless driving, neglected vehicles and roads, and poor enforcement of traffic laws have been blamed for many deadly road accidents in the Philippines.
