Former Kan. Agent Sentenced for Insurance Theft and Fraud

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger announced today that the Kansas Insurance Department, along with Johnson County authorities and the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, were involved in the case of a former insurance agent convicted of taking money from a Wyandotte County couple for non-existent insurance premiums.

Royetta Nichols, a former Johnson County insurance agent, will repay premiums that were taken fraudulently from the couple. The case came to light because the couple was involved in a traffic accident and sought to have Nichols assist with their claim. They found out that Nichols was no longer licensed, and the insurance company wasn’t receiving premiums from them.

Nichols pleaded no contest to one count of theft, but will pay the restitution for three counts. She was placed on 12 months’ probation by the Johnson County District Court. She will not be released from probation until the restitution is paid. If she fails to comply with probation, Nichols will have to spend six months in jail. She had served 76 days in jail on the charge prior to sentencing.
