South Dakota Store Owner to Plead Guilty to Arson for Insurance Money
The owner of a Gettysburg grocery store, Donn Quiett, is scheduled to plead guilty to a charge that he didn’t report a fire that destroyed the business.
Quiett, of Gettysburg, and Bradley Freidel of Aberdeen were indicted in federal court for the July 22, 2001, fire at D&D Super Value.
Freidel earlier pleaded guilty to arson, acknowledging he was paid nearly $60,000 to destroy the business so Quiett could collect more than $280,000 in insurance money. Freidel is to be sentenced Sept. 28.
Court documents Quiett signed say he plans to change his plea Sept. 9 and acknowledge he should have reported the fire. He also agreed to repay $100,000 of the insurance money he received from Auto-Owners Insurance Co. of Willmar, Minn.
