Indiana DOT Plans 28 Intersections for Roundabouts
The Indiana Department of Transportation is planning to install roundabouts at 28 more intersections across the state.
INDOT already has installed one in Valparaiso and two others along State Road 32 east of Noblesville. It plans to add the others over five years at a cost of about $26 million.
INDOT Commissioner Michael Cline tells the Indiana Business Journal that safety is driving the switch to roundabouts. Two years after INDOT built a roundabout at State Road 130 in Valparaiso, total crashes fell 6 percent and the number of injury crashes fell 65 percent.
A roundabout uses circular lanes to carry traffic in the same direction to the various spokes of an intersection. Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis is one, and the city of Carmel has more than 70.
