Ohio Attorney General Sues Roofing Company for Shoddy Work
The Ohio Attorney General announced a lawsuit against Murphy & Son, Inc, a Wickliffe-based roofing business charged with multiple violations of Ohio consumer law.
“This company offers to repair leaky roofs or provide similar services, but it routinely does a poor job, ignores consumer complaints, and fails to obtain proper permits or licenses,” DeWine said. “We’ve made several attempts to resolve these issues but the problems remain.”
According to complaints filed with the Ohio Attorney General’s and Better Business Bureau, consumers typically agree to pay Murphy & Son to fix minor roofing problems such as caulking. When the business comes to the consumers’ homes, the company then finds “major problems” that cost much more to repair. Following the repairs, roofs continue to leak or have other installation defects.
The attorney general’s lawsuit charges Murphy & Son with violating the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act by performing shoddy work and failing to correct such work, and by accepting deposits for work without obtaining the proper permits. The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief, civil penalties, and consumer restitution.
