NTSB: Pilot Failure to Abort Caused Illinois Crash
Federal investigators say a pilot’s failure to abort takeoff caused a small plane to crash into a suburban Chicago, Ill., fitness center two years ago.
The Naperville Sun reports Tuesday that the National Transportation Safety Board also cited improper aircraft inspection and a hole in the plane’s exhaust pipe as contributing factors to the October 2010 crash. The single-engine plane struck the basketball court of XSport Fitness in Naperville, about 30 miles west of Chicago. Both people on board were injured, but survived. The aircraft was headed to Pittsburgh.
No one inside the gym was injured.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft is registered to Airplane Holdings Company in Wilmington, Del.
