Roofing Permits in Hutchinson Return to Normal

A surge in demand for roofing permits that began in Hutchinson, Kansas, after a July 23 hailstorm appears to be coming to an end.

Nearly 2,000 new roofs, with a value of just under $24 million, have been installed since the hailstorm. The city issued an average of 110 roofing permits a week, with an average value of $1.3 million.

Last week, 21 permits for new roofs valued at $117,783 were issued, the lowest numbers during the 18-week period and the third straight weekly decline, The Hutchinson News reported.

The storm pelted the city with 2.5- to 4-inch hail, with much of the damage in the eastern sections of the city. While most of the permits were for homes nearly every major business in the city also was hit. The largest single roofing permit was $2.3 million for Siemens Wind Power in southeast Hutchinson. Other major repairs were at Dillons’ corporate headquarters and warehouses, totaling $2.53 million; the theater and shops of the Hutchinson Mall for $1.85 million and Jackson Dairy’s, with a new roof valued at $558,500.

The damage created work for about 140 roofing contractors from a wide area around Hutchinson.
