Inquiries About Renters Insurance Climb After Central Illinois Tornadoes

An insurance agent in central Illinois says he’s noticing an increase in the number of inquiries about renters’ insurance following the deadly November tornadoes.

The (Peoria) Journal-Star reports one of the newly insured is Jesse Hunter.

The Washington man and his family had discussed getting a renter’s policy before a Nov. 17 twister destroyed their duplex, but never got around to purchasing the coverage. He says they didn’t know they’d be unprotected.

Now, they’re insured – even if the policy won’t cover the damage from the storm.

Patrick Sams is a financial representative for Country Financial. He says the two dozen tornadoes that hit Illinois have been a reminder to people to get the policies, which also covers theft, fires, floods and personal liability.
