Ohio Jury Awards $39M in Fatal Construction Accident

April 6, 2014

An Ohio jury has awarded $39 million to the family of a construction inspector killed during a highway repaving project.

An attorney for the family of victim Randy Roginski described the working conditions in the construction zone on Interstate 271 near Cleveland as “ridiculously dangerous.”

The 41-year-old Roginski died in 2010 in an accident just after midnight in which the driver whose car struck him was not charged.

The Plain Dealer reports a Cuyahoga County jury on Thursday awarded $19 million in compensation to Roginski’s wife and three children and $20 million in punitive damages against The Shelly Company, one of Ohio’s largest paving companies.

The Shelly Company said it was disappointed, denied responsibility for the accident and planned to fight the verdict.
