Indiana Counties Hit by January Storm Get FEMA Aid

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved disaster aid for 19 Indiana counties hit by a January storm that brought paralyzing snow and frigid readings.

FEMA officials had initially rejected Indiana’s request for federal aid for local governments and some nonprofit groups in 49 counties following the Jan. 5-9 snowstorm.

Gov. Mike Pence had appealed the agency’s decision.

Pence said Tuesday that FEMA had approved major disaster declarations and aid for 19 counties and Indiana can now request assistance for additional counties.

Approved counties can get federal grants to cover 75 percent of their expenses for the storm’s damage to roads and other infrastructure.

The 19 approved counties are: Boone, Clay, Hendricks, Huntington, Jasper, Kosciusko, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Noble, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Tipton, Vigo, Wabash, White and Whitley.
