Michigan Firefighters, Volunteers Install Smoke Detectors
Firefighters and volunteers have installed about 10,000 smoke detectors in homes in Saginaw, Mich., during an eight-month period.
The Saginaw News reports that the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Fire Protection and Safety Grant paid for most of the cost of the smoke detector giveaway, which ended last month.
Saginaw Fire Chief Christopher Van Loo says he appreciated the work of his firefighters and other supporters of the project. Saginaw’s neighborhood associations, the American Red Cross Great Lakes Bay Chapter and other city departments were involved.
The FEMA grant provided $96,000 for the project and the city contributed $24,000.
