Okla. Grand Jury Once Again Hears Testimony on Fisher

Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher’s troubles keep mounting.

Fisher was recently taken out of the race for the U.S. Senate by Democratic rival, U.S. Rep. Brad Carson, 37, who won the Democratic primary vote by a wide margin.

Now his lawyer fears that Fisher will be served with yet another grand jury indictment, according to the Oklahoman news organization.

The commissioner is facing four felony counts related to embezzlement and operating a charity illegally. A state House of Representatives panel considering his impeachment is also investigating Fisher.

The Associated Press reported that a multicounty grand jury met for three days this week and heard testimony concerning Fisher.

The panel has statewide investigative and prosecutorial jurisdiction and heard testimony on other matters besides the insurance commissioner.

According to the AP, Steven Silverstein, who was chief executive of the failed Heritage Insurance Co., was one of at least five witnesses who testified in the closed proceedings.

Nancy Tackett, a state insurance department fiscal officer who has testified previously that she raised concerns with Fisher about how continuing education funds were being handled, Oklahoma Ethics Commission Executive Director Marilyn Hughes and Fisher Foundation accountant Randy Compton also testified, according to the AP report.

The Oklahoman reported that the grand jury has issued a three-page indictment naming one person on one count, but the indictment remains sealed. The date for unsealing the indictment reportedly has not been set.
