La. Police Officer Arrested for Alleged Ins. Fraud
The Louisiana State Police reported that its insurance fraud unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation recently arrested a Marksville city police officer after a lengthy investigation into an alleged insurance fraud scheme.
Herbert Guillot Jr, age 36, of Marksville was arrested and charged with 18 U.S.C. 371 – Conspiracy, 18 U.S.C. 1341 & 2 – Mail Fraud, 18 U.S.C. 152(5) – Concealment of Assets, 18 U.S.C. 1956 (a)(1)(b)(1) – Money Laundering.
Detectives received a complaint regarding a bogus insurance fraud scheme involving an unidentified woman and Officer Guillot. The woman’s house had been burglarized and some jewelry was reported stolen. While the burglary was legitimate, the alleged stolen jewelry was not stolen, but was given to Guillot for safe keeping until after the insurance claim was settled. The woman was paid $10,540.00 from her insurance company for the jewelry to settle the claim. The woman then alleged that Guillot coerced her into filing the claim and then took the settlement check.
The same woman had also previously filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and was required to report all assets. Guillot allegedly assisted the woman in concealing the money from the insurance company in an account in his name.
Guillot voluntarily surrendered himself at the Marksville Police Station through Chief of Police Newman Greenhouse, who fully cooperated with the joint investigation.
Guillot was transported to the Federal Courthouse in Alexandria where he was booked and processed by U.S. marshalls.
The insurance fraud unit is responsible for investigating referrals of suspected fraudulent insurance acts; assisting federal and local law enforcement in the investigation of fraudulent insurance acts; cooperating with local prosecutors and the attorney general’s office in the prosecution of fraudulent insurance acts; and promoting awareness of insurance fraud throughout the state.
