High Winds Cause Minor Damage in Mississippi

High winds buffeted Mississippi as a storm system passed through, injuring a Jones County resident and causing damage and power outages statewide.

The extent of the Jones County victims’ injuries was unclear, though the person was taken to the hospital. Also, a car was destroyed and two Federal Emergency Management Agency travel trailers were rendered uninhabitable, emergency officials in the southeast Mississippi county reported.

Lea Stokes, spokeswoman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, said high winds in DeSoto County also caused a wall at a fire department in Lewisburg to collapse. No one was injured.

Memphis, Tenn., television station WREG-TV reported Tuesday night that wind gusts up to 50 mph brought down the Gold Strike Casino and Resort sign in Tunica. A message left for Tunica County emergency management officials was not returned.

Stokes said there was also a report of a roof blown off a house in Bolivar County, but that remained unconfirmed Tuesday night.
