5 Mississippi Counties under State of Emergency after Severe Weather
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency for five counties following a severe weather system and tornadoes affected parts of North Mississippi on May 2.
Thunderstorms with high winds, tornadoes and torrential rains causing damage to homes, businesses, infrastructure and public property affected Coahoma, Grenada, Panola, Prentiss and Union Counties, Barbour said.
“This weather system caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure that threatened both the safety of our citizens and public property,” Barbour said. “To help rectify the damages caused by the severe weather system, I am issuing this state of emergency so emergency personnel can distribute necessary supplies to affected residents and have the authority to provide other essential services to storm victims in an expedient manner.”
